  Was elected by the narrow margin of 71 to 68 over his vice-president and successor Thomas Jefferson. Presided from 1797 to 1801. Was the first president to live in Washington, D.C. Died on the same day a few hours after Thomas Jefferson. Was responsible for appointing George Washington Commander-in-Chief of the Army.
